Designer Manholes in Milan

Have you ever wanted to walk on the creations of some of the greatest Italian designers? Now you can do it thanks to Over the Under open-air exhibition which features 24 hand-carved and hand-painted manholes, conceived by the major fashion gurus, including Valentino, Versace, Prada and Ferragamo, amongst the others.

The embellished street covers are installed in Via Montenapoleone and Via Sant’Andrea,  two of the most luxurious fashionable routes in Milan, and will be on display until January 2016. After that they will be auctioned off at Christie’s and the revenue will contribute to improve the socio-economical conditions of 20.000 people, especially women.

Does street level art exist in your city as well?

Take a look at some of the Milanese couture manholes, do you have a favorite?

  1. They are really cool! I love the idea of beautifying something that is normally ugly and mundane. My sis lives in Milan. Will have to ask her if she’s seen them.

    1. I agree with you, and it is a good example that street art is now always only about senseless graffiti. They have done similar projects in other districts of Milan and they were very successful.
