Best Shops in Sofia: When in Bulgaria buy Bulgarian

Are you in Sofia, looking for cool, one of a kind pieces, produced by local designers? If you do, then you’d better check out the lowdown of the best shops in the city.

Sassa Björg –  Don’t get fooled by the name – Sassa Björg is a fashion label based in Sofia and founded by the prominent Bulgarian designer Mila Ateva. Located in a spacious light-filled apartment in the heart of the town, the atelier offers a wide array of casual wear and cocktail dresses. Everything is rigorously handmade by her or by one of the seamstresses that you can easily spot in action while you browse the place. And if you have any particular requests or simply want to unchain your creativity, it is possible to order a bespoke garment which will be designed especially for you. Last but not least – all of this comes at very affordable prices.

Alert: This could easily become one of your favorite places ( and your partner’s too). The fast wi-fi, the possibility to take a rest while sitting on the terrace, sipping a cup of coffee, plus the top notch staff, can quite effortlessly make you feel at home.

Sassa Björg: Solunska Str., 65 ( look for the red door ). For more information you can visit their Facebook page

Maria Queen Maria – This is the right place to be if you don’t want to blend with everyone else and you are looking for an edgy and avant-garde look. The two ladies behind the brand, Mina Kaye and Maria Ilieva, are courageously pushing the boundaries and breaking down the barrier of trend-following. They explore new aesthetics with monochromatic and deconstructed garments that shift the attention away from the expected contours of the female body. The best part is that you can customize your favorite item by choosing different color or lenght.

Mariq Queen Maria: Rakovski Str., 193 ( the shop boasts one of the sweetest sales assistants I have ever met ). Visit their website if you want to know more.

Sabai is one of the essential words in Thai and means happy, comfortable, feeling fine. This is the spirit of the cozy shop with white bricks walls, situated in a quiet side street in downtown. The venue celebrates the artisrtic creativity of the local jewelry makers, photographers and painters. Here you can find minimalist necklaces, ceramic brooches, statement rings and beautiful, decorative pieces that cater to all tastes. In addition, you can have some casual chat with the shop owner about yoga and meditation.

Sabai: Neofit Rilski Str., 63. Follow their Facebook page for the latest updates

Fabrica carries well-edited collection of designers in apparel, jewelry and leather accessories. Signature pieces include massive necklaces made of innovative materials and hand-decorated shoes. It is a situated a little bit off the main shopping roads, however, it is in close proximity to the Parliament and the University of Sofia. A must-visit if you are looking for casual but perfected, simple but elegant, and definitely comfortable garments.

Fabrica: Tsar Osvoboditel Blvd, 27

Kliutch (means Key in Bulgarian) is another charming little shop for designer clothing and jewelry in the city center. The accent here is definitely on the accessories that come in different styles and materials and can satisfy the tastes of girls and women from any background. It is not uncommon to spot a plethora jewelry pieces made with leather, plastic, chains, natural stones or cotton threads. What I loved most were the upcycled hinges, nipples and trunnels. The place is always packed with customers and the stock moves really fast. In summer they have a second store on the seaside, in the laid back village of Sinemorets.

Kliutch: Tzar Asen Str., 14, Sofia. Follow them on Facebook
