Milan is not expensive: Local markets

The local markets in Milan are not like the others around the world. They are not permanent but, instead, move everyday in different areas of the city. Every neighbourhood has at least one market and a particular weekday assigned to it. They happen between the streets and squares of the town (and let me say it, they create traffic and lack of parking for the joy of the drivers)

Before the era of the modern outlets it was there that the fashion brands used to sell their remaining stock. Now it is still possible to track down some appealing items but first you will have to outdo the countless stands with mass production Made in China plus the infinite crowd. And talking about the crowd, it is good to mention you will see there people from any social class and background, from the homeless gypsies (be very very very aware of your pocket) to the local hi-sos with a black visa card.

The photos that follow were taken today at the market of Viale Papiniano which is one of the biggest and most popular ones. You can find there any kind of merchandise there, from fresh bread to books and vintage dresses. As you will see my emphasis wasn’t on the food area and I didn’t even put feet there. I can’t say no to fresh veggies and fosh and I didn’t want to risk carrying kilograms of them on my long way back home:)

How to get to Viale Papiniano’s local market: MM2 San’t Agostino or tram 2 and 14

Another market worth mentioning is the one at Viale Fauché where you can find discounted shoes from some of the most famous Italian brands like Fendi, Prada, Miu Miu, Hogan, Tod’s..

If you want to see the full list of the open-air markets in Milan you can do it here.

  2. Wow! Thanks for the tips! However, my hubby won’t take me to Italy because his co-worker told him “Never take your wife to Italy” after his wife shopped till she dropped.
