Weekend Getaway: What about Lake Garda?

In my mind I have always connected Garda lake with Gardaland – one of the top 10 amusement parks in the world. I have been there, of course, like every student worth of its name, and several years ago I also visited another village nearby which didn’t impress me particularly. So when we booked our weekend on the lake knew that I would be relaxing and nothing more. I, for sure, didn’t expect to see so much beauty and to take so many pictures.

We went to Garda (even some Italians aren’t aware that a village with the same name as the lake exists) which is one of the many harbour towns that embellish the shores of the lake. It is a lovely place boasting plenty of waterfront cafés, tiny, winding streets, pretty churhches, olive trees and azure waters.

We spent our two days jostling our way through the narrow streets, trying the local specialties (an absolute must-eat are the sardines which are cooked in a variety of ways), lining up for a cone of multicolored artisan made ice cream and enjoying a walk to the nearby town of Bardolino (3 km), thanks to the walking trail that links them. A local girl suggested that we continued further to the popular Lazise which is another 5 km, claiming that it takes her 30 minutes to arrive, but I suspect that she was marathoner.

Garda is also a very popular destination for holidaymakers from Austria and Germany which are only a few hours away by car. If you speak German you won’t have any comprehension problems, guaranteed. I even saw pasta in the colors of the German flag.

If you happen to be in Milan, Venice or Verona don’t miss this little pearl. It is perfect even for a day trip.

      1. Salo. It was in a really aweful movie once, but it had some incredible shots of the town. We drove through some other towns too. I don’t remember which

  1. I hope you don’t mind, me commenting on all of your posts…but I just relate to so many of your cool posts. It’s so funny, when I took the train back from Milano, I passed by lake garda and I told my friends that I have never been there. But I would like to go once. And just about two weeks ago, one of my friends had a business meeting there and said that it is a very beautiful place. Looking at your photos, it really seems to be true.

    1. No, I love your comments, they are always so funny ? what you said above is the prove that energy flows where attention goes. Now you stumble upon the lake all the time! (But are you sure you didn’t pass by the lake Maggiore?)

      1. Ahh that’s great to hear 🙂 Of course, you are right…I didn’t pass by lake garda. I passed by Lago di Como. That’s why we were talking about famous holiday destinations for Swiss people. And obviously, I have never been to the famous lake garda. Or lake como for that matter 🙂 I see, I have to visit Italy more often 😉

  2. Sounds wonderful – did you know sardines contain the highest amount of nutrients than any other fish? Smart Italians! In North America they feed them to cattle!

    1. Ha! I didn’t know this! In this case I will eat more sardines from now on! It is a good excuse to have my weekly dose of fried sardines which are so incredibly delicious here.
