The Best Beaches of Zanzibar: Bwejuu

Nungwi, Bwejuu, Paje, Kendwa, Kiwengwa….

The most difficult part about organizing a holiday in Zanzibar is deciding which beach to visit.

They are all beautiful and different from each other. If you don’t have a month at your disposal it inevitably means that you have to make a choice and each choice means that you say no to something else.

We spent ten days in Zanzibar and had the chance to visit Nungwi, Kendwa, Bwejuu and Paje. Even though I have a favorite it could be really difficult to choose just one as they all have their own charm.

Bwejuu is on the Southeast side of the island and boasts seaweed farms and large stretches of white sand beach but all of this is visible only with the low tide. Less diverse than the most popular Nungwi beach, it is the go-to place for a laid back days spent lying down under the coconut palm trees or bicycling around them.

The dusty village of Bwejuu is right behind the beach offering a unique glimpse into the local life. Encounters with cows eating grass and large school groups marching on the beach and singing happy songs are not uncommon at all.

Here are some pictures from our days in this part of the island.
