When you are in a foreign place and see something familiar it immediately draws your attention. This is exactly what happened to me while I was browsing the exotic food stalls in my neighborhood. Spotting Italian handmade fettuccine ( popular type of pasta ) in a place frequented mostly by locals was quite unexpected and surpising but it was all true, thanks to a lovely Thai girl called Cake.
She started cooking at the tender age of 8 as she was the eldest daughter and she had to provide for the family while her mom was at work. Her first business with grilled shrimps failed miserably. No one was interested in purchasing them – probably because it is something within everyone’s reach – Cake explained. That’s how she came up with the idea of fettuccine – more sophisticated and unusual but still close to Thai traditions ( see pad that for example ). On her first day at a local pop-up food market all products were sold out in just few hours. She is now 28 and is running a catering company with her husband. What is more she is one of the most prominent Thai chefs and a winner of various international competitions.
The stall is open only for lunch. You can choose the fettuccine and the sauce that you prefer. Currently you can try carbonara, ragù or Thai spicy style. Everything is delicous and the pasta tastes just like the one you can enjoy in Italy – remarkable, considering that Cake has never been to the Bel Paese and that her teacher is Youtube. This girl is the proof that where there is a will there is way. She is currently waiting for her ravioli machine to arrive from Italy and I’m sure of one thing – I will be there to try the new tasty arrivals.
Her food stall is situated on Soi Piphat 5 , very close to Chong Nonsi BTS. Just take the busy street food soi in front of 7/11 and then look at your left. Open from 12 pm to max 2 pm.
*Soon there will be more locations around Bangkok, the most imminent one will be at Abdulrahim Place.
