As I mentioned in one of my previous post about some interesting facts about Bulgaria, when I say where I come from, I can clearly see that most people are not very familiar with my country. The most adventurous ones ask me if it is a nice place to visit, and, being the unbiased person that I am, I always firmly say – Of course it is!
This weekend I was back in Sofia, taking advantage of the Italian bank holiday. I decided to take some photos of the city, something I’ve never done before, and try to see it with the eye of a tourist. I rarely go back home and when I do it is just for a few days. My days are usually planned to the minute and I never really have time to look around. However, my time management skills seem to have improved in the past months, so I did everything that I had in mind.
I was surprised to discover that actually Sofia is quite a nice place ( I’m usually very critical ), very green, with excellent venues for a day or night out, where everything is within easy reach ( and most importantly public wi-fi almost everywhere).
So here it is, my Sofia, a beauty that I’ve just (re)discovered.
What do you think about it? Do you like it? Have you ever been to South-Eastern Europe?
Ahhh, Sophia, I’d love to visit the city. Thanks for the terrific photos and the nice introduction. ?
Thank you for reading it, Mike! Sofia is waiting for you! ?
I love Sofia! And Bulgaria in general. Beautiful nature, colorful, chaotic cities, lovely people. One of my favorites! A real gem. It’s been years, but you make me want to go back!
Wow you have been to Bulgaria! I don’t know about the other cities but Sofia is getting cleaner and more beautiful. You absolutely have to come come back and see the difference ?
It looks absolutely beautiful! Sofia has just rocketed up my wish-list.
Yay ? happy to read this ?
Thank you for sharing the contrasts and colors of Sofia. I like this post.
I like your format. Looks great! What a pleasant read.
Lovely photos & an amazing and honest write-up Gabi. I’m definitely visiting soon 🙂
Yayyy, thank you! Be sure to do it in spring/summer, otherwise it is not so sunny and warm ?
I’ve always loved European architecture and I see that Sofia is filled with amazing structures. Your home city really is beautiful and this was a great photo essay. Thank you for taking the time to share it with those of us (I confess, I know little about Bulgaria) who have never considered this as a tourist destination.
Bulgaria is not a popular tourist destination ( probably because there is a big informative gap ) which actually makes it a tempting little gem to be discovered. Before the Second World War Sofia was known as the little Wien. Now it is very far away from those golden years but the glamour of the past can still be found in our architectural heritage. I’m happy that you liked and hope that one day you will come to Bulgaria and see more ?
I passed a very happy week in Sofia, staying in the Sheraton hotel. I can’t remember the name of the very popular street with all the nightlife just round the corner from the hotel (and the palace with the changing of the guard) but I really really liked it. I also liked the small flea markets all over the city, had a great time.
Always put Sofia on my travel lists, but I missed it so far 🙁 I´ll keep tryin 🙂
Wow really? I hope you can make it soon! ?
I recently made a Bulgarian friend and he has talked a little of Sofia. Thanks for sharing your pics so I have a better idea of where he (and you!) come from 🙂
Amazing!
