After the morning trip to the abandoned city of Craco we headed to the Stone town of Matera ( I wonder in what kind of place would we have ended up if we had continued with the excursions ). Matera is located as well in the remote southern region of Basilicata and is a unique off the beaten path destination, especially for foreign travellers.
The town is famous for its extensive cave-dwelling districts where people have lived since Paleolithic times. Now many of them are transformed in hotels and restaurants and offer one of Italy’s more exotic experiences.
We didn’t have time to explore the grottos but a quick walk around the town helped us understand why Matera has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Great location and the stone buildings looks amazing.
