When I heard the allarm clock ringing yesterday morning all I wanted to do is to ignore it. After the nine hours car trip accross the country the previous day, my body (thought it) needed to stay for a few more hours in the bed. My mind, on the contrary, was eager to explore. After a short internal battle I jumped out of the bed and got ready to start the day. The plan involved a visit to Vietri sul Mare (literally means Vietri on the Sea) and Cetara (both on the Amalfi coast) and then to the lights of Salerno which are getting viral around Italy. My sister in law was supposed to come with me but she didn’t wake up so I spent a few hours alone, before she reached me.
We have always moved around with a car so the first task was to figure out how to use the public transport. Luckily, it exists and even the timetables are online. I took the bus from the train station of Salerno, after buying the ticket from one of the booths inside. They leave every hour and it takes only 15 minutes to arrive to Vietri sul Mare, which is the first town of the coast (or the last if you come from Napoli).
The bus stop is right in the city center which consists of a few narrow streets going up and down the steepy hill that plunges into the sea. Even if you have never been to Vietri sul Mare you can in no time figure out what it is famous for. Every other shop sells handpainted ceramics – tables, plates, jars, holders, you name it, they have it. There is even a Museum of Vietri Ceramics which showcases examples of local production starting from the XV century.
As the time was limited I also limited my excursion to the urban exploration. I found some picturesque corners and also had a glimpse into to the local life out of the tourists season (and the locals had a glimpse at me too as you will see in one of the pictures below).
I will be spending the next three days on the table tasting Italian delicacies and playing social games. I hope I will survive this so-not-me marathon.
Happy holidays, my beloved readers <3
