If it takes you more than three minutes to take a photo that you like then you are doing something wrong. And it’s not your insta boyfriend/husband/mother/sibling/friend’s fault.
I used to spend waste a lot of time trying to get the perfect shot. After a few years of experience, both as an influencer and a photographer, I realized that it’s not worth spending hours in something as futile as an IG post. Well, unless you get abundantly paid for it. And you can dramatically reduce that the time to get that enviable Instagram photo if you follow these steps:
- love yourself and accept your body – if you don’t like how you look you won’t like yourself in the pictures either. The person behind the camera is not a miracle maker, they just capture the reality.
- dress appropriately – if you think that you are fat and your arms look big, wearing a bodycon, strapless dress will not help. I had this issue a few years ago. I didn’t like how skinny my shoulders looked. Nevertheless it took me a while to understand that the solution was very simple. Just cover what you don’t like. I often do this with my face too and then I am always happy with the result.
- wear what makes you feel good – if you don’t feel beautiful and comfortable in what you wear it shows in the photo. And you will never like it. No matter how many hundreds of shots you take.
- know yourself – everyone has good angles and everyone has a mirror. Use it to experiment and learn in which poses you look good.
- decide your poses beforehands – once you know which are the poses that flatter your body the most you can match them to your outfit and surroundigs.
- do your location research – if you go somewhere for the first time you can get a very precise idea of the place by having a look at the pictures other people have taken there. Try to search it with Google Images or Instagram geo tag. Maybe you will find something that you really like and that will work with your mood. Or when you arrive in a hotel, for instance, have a walk in the premises and choose your favorite spots. Taking pictures with your phone really helps with the planning.
- explain clearly to your shutter presser what should be and should not be in the frame. Set the upper, lower, left and right limits. Show where in the frame you want to be. Take a trial shot and explain all these points clearly. Don’t take for granted that images speak more than words. They don’t.
I now live by these principles when it comes to have my pictures taken. The benefits are enormous:
- no more stress for the sweetest one and myself
- no more hundreds of similar photos in my camera roll
- more time to enjoy the moment wherever we are
Whenever it takes me more time to get a photo it’s just because I don’t know what I want from it.
