Porto Venere: The inspiration of Lord Byron

Whenever you read a name of an Italian town, starting with Porto, you can be sure that it is a fascinating place. Although Porto Venere lacks the ostentatious luxury of its wealthier brothers (or sisters?) Porto Cervo, Porto Fino and Porto Rotondo, it offers the laid-back, charming atmosphere that is uniquely Italian.

Situated in the Gulf of Poets – the name is a guarantee itself – this colorful and steep village is known to have inspired Lord Byron and Shelly for their literary works.

The whole town can be seen in 15 minutes but you can spend much more time contemplating the quiet gulf, the waves crashing on the cliffs on the other side, sunbath on the small stripe of sand, try the fresh seafood with a glass of local wine or just hop on the battello (passenger ferry) and explore the nearby Cinque Terre.

Below are some shots from this little Ligurian jewel.

Do you feel as inspired as Byron and Shelly did? 🙂

  1. Inspiring pix and article. I’m headed to nearby Piombino next summer, and I’ve just added Porto Venere to my To Do list. Thank you!

    1. Wow I’m glad that you liked it! The tirrenic coast is full of nice places. Especially in Tuscany where you will be.
